How Did I Do Today, Lord?

Colossians 3:23-24 (NLT) Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you and inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.

My friend Mannie made a lasting impact on my life. For forty years we worked side-by-side helping people who were overlooked in our community. Of course, Mannie always went above and beyond. He did more and gave more – out of his own resources. Mannie ended each day by asking, “How did I do today, Lord?” as if he expected God to answer. Jokingly, I would respond in a holy voice, “You’re doing too much!” Mannie continued helping others long after we’d retired, and daily he’d ask the Lord about his work. He said he would stop asking until he received an answer. It was our 7th year retirement anniversary, and I went to pick Mannie up for breakfast. He didn’t answer his door, so I used the key he gave me to enter his front door. There he was sitting in his rocker holding his Bible open, fully dressed - from the day before. His eyes were closed, and he had a pleasant smile on his face. Mannie finally got his answer from God. I looked down at his lap, and his finger was pointing at Matthew 25:21: “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” May God continue to bless you - His servants who - like Mannie are eager to do your very best for your Savior.
