How Can I Help?
Galatians 6:2-3 (NLT) Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.
On three different occasions I turned to a friend and asked for his help just as he made me promise him that I would. Each time I did, he left a bitter bite in my spirit. When I asked him to come help me lift a table in my home, he told me he wouldn’t charge me ‘this time’. When an unexpected bill was due before my next payday, he resentfully loaned me the $28.00 I needed, and then he met me at the bank on my payday to collect his money – ‘with interest’! And when my parents passed away, and I asked for his presence and support – he chose to give me space. He was not there for me. My friend really wasn’t my friend. He was only a friend to himself. Do you know someone who behaves this way towards you? Do you behave this way towards the people in your life? Be mindful that it is both a privilege and an obligation from God that we make ourselves available to help each other – without stipulations. When Jesus helped us out by suffering on the cross for our salvation – we weren’t all that then – and we’re not all that now! Yet, He stands ready to help us just as we are meant to help each other. Don’t offer or ask if you don’t wholeheartedly mean it. How can I help you? Hopefully, I just did.
