The Illusion of a Perfect Cross
Acts 5:30 (NLT) The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you killed him by hanging him on a cross.
Jesus – God’s only Son – was Perfection personified, but He was nailed to an imperfect cross. The cross our Savior died on wasn’t straight, shiny, or glamorous in any form or fashion. It was a rugged cross carved from a tree. It was dirty, heavy, splintered, and uneven. That’s the kind of cross Jesus was nailed to. It hurts just to think about it. In sharing the Gospel of Jesus, we have to tell about His death on the cross to clear away the illusion that he died on a perfect cross. I often wonder what thoughts go through the minds of new believers who enter the house of worship and either see a straight and majestic cross hanging on the wall…or no cross at all. Do they think the suffering Jesus took for us was clean and easy? Do they think they must have a clean and perfect life in order to come to Jesus? Do they think of the significance of the cross at all – especially if they don’t see its symbolism where they go to worship? It’s important to consider such things. The illusion of a perfect cross does not tell the story about the sin debt Jesus paid for our salvation. Let’s make sure that we do.
