Make It Plain
“I went to church when I was very young, but when I was six, I asked my mother why the church kept calling me a sinner when I hadn’t done anything wrong.” – Miles Davis (1926 – 1991) American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer
A woman shared her childhood reflections on going to church every Sunday and napping on her mother’s lap during the preaching hour. When she got a little older she stayed awake and doodled on the church bulletin while the preacher shouted. But on one distinct Sunday morning - right in the middle of her doodling – her empty thoughts shifted to what the preacher was saying. It upset her. After church, she told her mother that she didn’t want to go to church anymore because the preacher said that everyone there was lost in sin, and God was going to punish them. The emphasis of what she heard overshadowed the preacher’s conclusion about the Good News. Fortunately, the woman had a Mama and Grandmama who explained to her what God’s Word says in full and sparked a desire in her to know more about God and His Son. Parents and guardians, we can’t assume that our young ones understand everything they learn at church. We must make the Word plain for them by having further conversations after the preaching hour has come and gone. Of all there is for them to know about the Bible, we want to make it plain to them that Jesus loves them unconditionally. Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105 (NIV)
