Remember Me

Luke 22:19-20 (NIV) And he took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”

We use the elements of bread and wine symbolically during Holy Communion to remember the sacrifice Jesus made with His body and His blood for the purchase of our salvation. Our Savior initiated this ceremonial rite with His disciples in the upper room at his last supper with them during the Passover. What mixed emotions the disciples must have felt – knowing there was nothing they could do to change the course of events that were going to happen to Jesus. It must have seemed surreal for them to think that in just a little while they would no longer be able to be in the presence of their Rabbi. Temporary brokenness for eternal wholeness – that’s the way it had to be in order for Jesus to save us. Consider all of these things as you meditate on what Holy Communion means to you. Remember Who the bread and the wine represents… Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance of Me.”
