Righteous Anger
(Romans 12:19/NLT)
Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord.
The darts thrown at you are lethal. You’ve been patient. You’ve been courageous. Things die down for a bit, making you think your adversaries have gotten the message that you are not the one they want to mess with. But they regroup and come back to use you as target practice. Snap! Uh-oh! That’s the sound of the last straw that broke the camel’s back! Just as you take that deep adrenaline-fused breath before turning around to go handle the situation for once and for all, the Holy Spirit blocks you by reminding you that there is nothing righteous about the anger you are feeling. Spirit tells you that it’s better for you to stay in your lane and not cross God’s lane than it would be for you to go create a long-term wreck with a temporary fix. (Hmm…that’s some good stuff you’re talking, Holy Spirit!) So, you settle down. And as if that weren’t enough, the Holy Spirit assigns you the task of carrying out a good deed toward your adversaries before you leave work for the day. What the heck? Again, you obey because you know your arms are too short to box with God. Long story short – when the tide turns on your adversaries and God takes His righteous revenge – the good deed you did towards them gives you a sense of humility and empathy toward them when the effects of Gods revenge have their day. What a mighty God we serve!
