I Understand
(Proverbs 18:2) A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.

‘I understand’ are two words that give comfort to the heart and mind of someone who simply desires to be heard and understood. We want to be as helpful as we can be to others, but the best way to do that in  most cases is not by providing a solution to a problem. Rather, it is our response to listen to the individual. It doesn’t matter whether or not we fully understand or even have a suggestion to offer. What matters is that we are able to effectively convey to the person that they have our full attention, and they matter most to us in that moment. ‘I understand’ are two gentle words that – when spoken with sincerity and love – can make people feel connected to us and help them realize they never have to face a struggle alone.
